Katrina Kaif, the modern Seeta Aur Geeta!

0

Katrina Kaif will soon be seen essaying the role of Hema Malini’s character in the remake of 1973 blockbuster Seeta Aur Geeta. Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar role will be essayed by Akshay Kumar and Abhay Deol, respectively. The Sippy family who were reported to have certain differences, have now made up and are friends.

In the original film, Hema Malini played a double role- a meek Seeta and the feisty Geeta. And the talented actress pulled off the challenging role with superb ease.

Produced by G P Sippy and directed by Ramesh Sippy in 1972, Seeta Aur Geeta will now be revived by Sascha and Shaan Sippy (grandsons of G P Sippy). Initially, there was a family feud over the remake rights. However, the spat is now resolved and the remake will now go on floors as planned.

Katrina Kaif is currently in London with SRK, shooting for Yash Chopra’s comeback film.

Kats as Seeta Aur Geeta! You think she will do justice to the film???

The Gun Master’s salute to Hitch****

Why was Agent Vinod delayed? Has it affected the final product?

No, the final product has obviously not been affected, but become even better. It was an ambitious film. When we were writing the script, we visited many countries. Ideally, we should spend one year in pre-production and then take dates from stars for shooting. But, we started shooting as we were excited to add a punch. I needed some more dates from my actors and this took time. I think the end product shows it’s worth it. When you see the movie, you’ll realise it.

Who is Agent Vinod? Is he a James Bond?

he film is an action-packed spy thriller set in today’s times. I am a big fan of old Indian spy thrillers like Aankhen of Dharmendra and Hitch**** films. It’s a mix of such stories. Mithun’s Gun Master was very successful and they made two of them. But, later, there hasn't been such a film. After the old Agent Vinod's release, there were no spy films for almost 10 years. If our film does well, then there can be more Agent Vinod stories.

You actually introduced Saif to dark cinema with Ek Haseena Thi. How did you convince him to play a negative role then?

Dil Chahta Hai released and people were enjoying him in that role very much. When we approached him, he was initially worried that it might affect his fan base. Somehow, once we started talking, we got along well and I told him, ‘It's a negative character, but also, charming and cunning. It’s a fun role to play.’ Once he agreed, he was comfortable with everything , including the climax, where rats surround him.

How important is the Mujra song for the film? Did you incorporate it to add to the commercial value of your film?

No, it’s a wedding scene. Kareena and Saif are on a mission, searching for a third person. In foreign films, they have a different background score but since it’s a Hindi movie, we planned a Mujra. One, people will wonder about a Mujra in such a film and two, it will make the viewers curious. They will enjoy it.

There were rumours that Saif has already planned its sequel. Is it true?

We keep wondering. If the film works, Inshallah! There may be a chance to make another.

Does the darker side of life fascinate you?

I like happier movies, but yes, I enjoy dark thrillers and crime dramas a little more. It’s my first choice in books or even at a DVD library.

You had signed Ramesh Sippy's Happy Birthday with John Abraham and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan long back. Will you reconsider the casting now since Ash’s life has changed?

In the last two years, I was busy with Agent Vinod so I have to meet them and find out before taking it forward. I might make certain changes in it. Happy Birthday is a fantasy film. It’s different from what I have done so far. I want to break away from the genre of dark thrillers. But, first of all, I will be taking a break and watch films that released last year.

Nadiadwala to celebrate 25th anniversary with 6 projects

February 18, 1987. On his 21st birthday, Sajid Nadiadwala had launched his production banner Nadiadwala Grandson. On completing 25 years in the Hindi cinema industry, the filmmaker, who has made 14 films till date, has decided to launch six more ventures in the recent future.
His upcoming projects include Salman Khan-starrer Kick, a Sabbir Khan directorial with Shahid Kapoor, Imtiaz Ali’s next with Hrithik Roshan, Judwaa 2 with Saif Ali Khan, the rendition of Chetan Bhagat’s 2 States with Ranbir Kapoor and the soon to release Housefull 2.

Looking back, the filmmaker said, “I used to work as an assistant to my uncle. I worked on various films like Gulaami, Hathyar and Main Azaad Hoon. In 1987, I became the member of IMPPA (Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association). My biggest achievement at the time was that I signed Govinda. After that, I signed Dharmendra and launched my first film Julm Ki Hukumat, which was directed by the late Bharat Rangacharya.”

“Akshay (Kumar) was my school friend. We used to go to Don Bosco. So, I made a film with him and Suniel Shetty titled Waqt Hamaara Hai. It was a hit. After that there was no looking back,” added Sajid.

Sajid, unlike other film-makers, has never dabbled with direction. “Fifteen years ago, I planned to direct a film. However, I didn’t. Then I got busy in making films. I am happy being a producer now,” said Sajid.

Dharmesh Darshan: Dilip Kumar has talent, SRK is amazing!

0

The debate about self made stars versus scions of famous filmy families is almost as old as the industry itself. Legends like Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra etc. and from the current top stars, Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar, who have made it big by the sheer dint of their labour and talent are standout examples. But the one cannot question the brilliance of an Aamir Khan, the towering screen presence of a Sanjay Dutt or Sunny Deol or even the star power and charisma of a Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan, who all have filmy background but are super stars in their own right.

The proud parents Hema and Dharmendra are looking for an auspicious date for the wedding, and will announce it soon.

Is the film industry now a divided house?

The recent unfortunate happenings in the film industry has made us nostalgic and got us thinking. We are reminded of what the old timers in the media used to tell us about the early days of superstars in Bollywood.

It is true that even in the days of the three greats- Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, there used to be camps, loyalists and lobbies, but then the competition used to be healthy. The industry used to be above all that and united. On his 90th birthday last month, the thespian Dilip Kumar recollected how he, the late Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand used to talk a lot to each other and the channels of communications never broke, even when some differences cropped up.

AAMIR KHAN, SALMAN KHAN, SHIRISH KUNDER, SHAHRUKH KHAN and HRITHIK ROSHAN

Cut to the 80s and once again Amitabh, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna never had any bitterness towards each other and just as today, makers used to have their favourites. The same was true with Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff.

One can even recall the entry of Hrithik Roshan, the biggest challenge to the Khan triumvirate in the early 2000, but upon winning the best actor award (for KAHO NA PYAR HAI) he was generous in his praise for Salman Khan and his gym for his super physique. The three Khans, Hrithik, Akshay and Ajay, never showed any animosity towards each other. Even the Aamir-SRK 'dog' incident (that hurt SRK's fan) was quickly resolved when Aamir said that he would apologise to SRK's kids if they were hurt.

Cut to the last 6-7 years and all that seems to be a thing of the past and the 'Vivek-Salman press conference', the SRK- Salman spat at Katrina's birthday (after the resolved SRK- Salman-Aish CHALTE CHALTE controversy), the Salman-Hrithik GUZAARISH controversy and now the mother of all, Sunday's unfortunate 'slapgate' involving SRK and Farah Khan's husband Shirish Kunder.

What is even more tragic is that SRK-Salman had made up at Farah-Shirish's wedding! And how can one forget the SRK-Farah friendship, where at one time Shah Rukh Khan had planned a flat for Farah within the premises of 'Mannat'!

The film industry, which used to stand united, in the wake of any crisis, both within and outside the fraternity, in times of war and peace, seems to be a house divided and the bonhomie within, a thing of the past.

However, all is not lost and we are still hopeful that the senior and saner elements to come forward and resolve the issues and unite the industry once again and also snub the elements who try to exploit and divide the film fraternity further, to achieve their narrow ends.

Ajay & Tusshar are 2012′s ‘Singhs’

0
Playing a Sardar in a Bollywood film is definitely the 'in' thing. Akshay Kumar started it all, Saif Ali Khan joined in as well, Salman Khan played one in HEROES and Ranbir Kapoor in ROCKET SINGH. Going by the current fad, Ajay Devgn is all set to play a sardar in his upcoming film SON OF SARDAR. Not only Devgn, but the most unsuspecting Tusshar Kapoor is also happy to wear a pagdi in his next release - CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI.

''Yes, of late quite a few B-town folks are playing a Sikh protagonist'', says a filmmaker, ''Earlier it was pretty much the territory of the likes of Dharmendra and Sunny Deol who were rightly known as the 'sons of soil'. Other senior actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt too have experimented by playing a Sardar. However in recent times it is Akshay Kumar who started the trend with SINGH IS KINNG and now other actors are hopping on to the bandwagon as well.''

TUSSHAR KAPOOR and AJAY DEVGN

It seems that Ajay will be well-liked by the audience in a sardar look. ''Ajay is playing the central protagonist in SON OF SARDAR and has already shot for it in Punjab. He had earlier played a Sikh protagonist in THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH but it was a relatively serious affair. SON OF SARDAR has been designed as a full-on-entertainer though and Ajay has gone an extra mile to get the nuances of a Sikh character right'', says a source from the production team.

On the other hand CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI would see Tusshar Kapoor as a sardar for a major segment of the film. An out and out comic affair, the film is directed by Samir Karnik who hit gold with his full-on Punjabi drama in YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA. Though he doesn't have Deols on his side this time around, the filmmaker is hoping that 'being Punjabi' would reap benefits for him yet again for his latest outing.

Tusshar says, ''The film has a North Indian backdrop to it and I had fun playing this character here. Personally for me comedy has always worked and Samir has made sure that this one is a full-on masala out and out romantic comedy. CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI is totally my genre and honestly, this film is the best thing that could have happened to me in the recent times.''

A couple of years ago it was Saif Ali Khan who turned sardar for one of the two characters that he played in LOVE AAJ KAL. It was a serious character but Arshad Warsi got into a comical zone when he portrayed a sardar character in DOUBLE DHAMAAL. This year though it would be the turn of Ajay Devgn and Tusshar Kapoor to get into the Sikh zone.

Sunny Deol and Anil Sharma To Cooperate Once More

0

Sunny Deol and Anil Sharma created the character of Tara Singh and made him famous in 2001. A decade later, the director and actor have decided to join hands again. This time too, Sunny would play a Sikh in the film titled Singh Saheb The Great.

Anil Sharma, who has also announced another film, Masters with the three Deols – Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby, has decided to make Singh Saheb… before starting with the next project. Mumbai Mirror has learnt that Dharmendra and Bobby will also be a part of this new film.

When contacted, Anil Sharma said, “Sunny will play an action hero in Singh Saheb The Great. He will be playing the role of a collector. The film is based in eastern UP and Punjab. It will address social issues.”
Shaktimaan Talwar, who wrote Gadar, will write the story and the screenplay of Singh Saheb… as well.

Top 10 Bollywood movies of 2011

From real life sagas to sci-fi and experimental to sentimental dramas – Bollywood’s potpourri of hits offered a wide range of themes. Films like “No One Killed Jessica”, “Ra.One” and “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” not only satiated the moviegoer’s appetite but also yielded profits for the Hindi film industry.

Here are the Top 10 movies of the year:

1. “Bodyguard“: Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s “Bodyguard” broke the opening day records by earning Rs.22 crore on the first day. Although the story of the film, directed by Atul Agnihotri, didn’t have much to say, the music as well as the action sequences worked in its favour.

Salman’s signature dialogue – “Mujh par ek ehsaan karna ki mujh par koi ehsaan na karna” – once again struck a chord with fans.

2. “Ra.One“: World class VFX, amazing graphics, innovative marketing, tie-ups with multiple brands and Shah Rukh Khan as the superhero made sci-fi thriller “Ra.One” a profitable venture. Another highlight of the film was its music, especially the song “Chamak challo” sung by international rapper Akon. And the marathon promotion by the superstar helped bring people to the theatres.

3. “The Dirty Picture“: Her sensuous look shocked, her itsy-bitsy clothes astonished and her double meaning dialogues left audiences gasping for breath, but all this nothwithstanding, Vidya Balan swept both the classes and the masses off their feet with her bold avatar in Ekta Kapoor’s “The Dirty Picture”. An unofficial biopic of southern sex symbol Silk Smitha, the film broke the myth that only movies with “Khans” work at the box office.

4. “Ready”: Romantic comedies have been a staple of Hindi films and this year Salman Khan’s “Ready” used the recipe to earn profits. Shot in exotic locales of Thailand, director Anees Bazmee’s drama about mistaken identity saw Salman romancing Asin Thottumkal amid all the hotch-potch in their lives, thanks to their onscreen relatives.

5. “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”: Focussing on three bachelors dealing with their friendship and romance, the well-scripted film, with a resemblance to real life episodes, was supported by beautiful performances by the talented cast – Hrtihik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, with Kalki Koechlin and Katrina Kaif as their love interests.
Kudos to director Zoya Akhtar for bringing liveliness, happiness and joyfulness with such deftness on screen through an adventurous road film mostly based in Spain.

6. “Singham”: An out-and-out action film, the success of “Singham” proves that there are takers for such films. Based on the “good wins over evil” theme, the actioner takes a dig at the corruption within the police department through two main characters – honest cop Ajay Devgn and Prakash Raj as a corrupt politician. Director Rohit Shetty’s film also marked southern actress Kajal Aggarwal’s debut in Bollywood.

7. “Rockstar”: Give him a good role and he can sink his teeth into it. Ranbir Kapoor proved that again by stepping into the shoes of a musician. From a cute and simple college boy to a crazy lover to a successful but cynical singer, the young actor proved his mettle in every frame. The film appealed despite a faulty script, which had too many loose ends. In short, it was Ranbir’s film, which launched American Pakistani model in the Bollywood business. Other high points of the movie were A.R. Rahman’s music and Mohit Chauhan’s singing.

8. “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan”: Not good, not bad – that is how Yash Raj Films’ “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan” could be described. Thanks to Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif and Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zaffar’s tangled love story woven against the backdrop a wedding, the romantic comedy managed to pull the crowds. The film got mixed reviews, but managed to enter the top grosser list of the year.

9. “Delhi Belly”: Replete with cuss words, weird situations, witty dialogues, the experimental movie in the English language targeted the urban audiences, who hailed this free will adult comedy as they identified with the characters of Imran Khan, Kunal Roy Kapoor and Vir Das in the movie. If director Abhinay Deo faced failure with “Game”, this film pulled him out of darkness and Aamir Khan once again proved that he has a knack for choosing the best scripts as a producer.

10. “Yamla Pagla Deewana”: After the 2007 release “Apne”, the Deol trio – Sunny, Bobby and Dharmendra – returned to the big screen with the comic caper “Yamla Pagla Deewana” by director Sameer Karnik. Though a small budget film, it received an overwhelming response. The impeccable comic timing between the father and sons struck a chord with the audiences.
