Gul Panag may bring U2 to India

0

Bollywood actress Gul Panag will soon be off to Toronto to meet members of Irish rock band U2 and convince them to perform in India in order to spread awareness regarding her online programme SOAP – Social Outreach and Accreditation Programme.

Through SOAP, Gul hopes to encourage a culture of volunteerism in India where accredited NGOs, corporate houses and people who wish to volunteer can find a common and fruitful meeting ground.

“I’m a huge U2 fan and it is one band that cuts across age barriers. For us, it is clearly to raise awareness about SOAP because today it is sad that no one is really interested to know about a social cause. But if it is attached with something exciting, it grabs attention,” Gul told IANS.

Gul has started a drive that will culminate with her attendance at the U2 concert in Toronto July 11. She has launched a petition that allows U2 fans across India to sign up names and messages to the band that Gul hopes to hand-deliver when she visits Toronto to watch the band.

“We have got a phenomenal response for the campaign. We are trying to reach about 10 lakh people so that we can convince U2 that we have a big market in India and they agree to come and perform for us and take up this cause. I have written to everyone from the band and will meet their management when I go for the concert in July,” she revealed.

The actress, who has worked in films like “Dor”, “Dhoop”, “Manorama Six Feet Under” and “Hello”, says that a system of credits for volunteer work has been installed to encourage individual sign-ups.

“The credits are defined by a matrix that takes into account your abilities, skill and the time you give to a cause. It is quantifiable across educational institutions and corporates. We have already partnered with Essar Group, HSBC and Standard Chartered among others.

“Anyone who will earn these credits will be given weightage during their job interviews or appraisals. The idea is to give people an incentive to volunteer so that it is interesting for them too,” said the 32-year-old actress.

Social networking site, Twitter was abuzz about a clash, between actress Gul Panag and author Chetan Bhagat. Though Chetan’s sense of humor is out of this world, yet at times, the writer slips into silliness.

It all started with Chetan cracking a joke about Panag’s name, tweeting, “If gulpanag had married umar gul (Pakistani cricketer), wud her name become gul gul?.”

Panag, who is currently on her honeymoon, shot back saying, “At least you are expected to be more original than that.” She then re-tweeted a comment made by one of her followers who wrote to Bhagat, “Such an old and boring joke!”

Since Bhagat made his comment during the India-Pakistan semi final encounter, one person mocked him with a comment: “Match dekh lo bhai sahab. Gul memsahab happily married hain ab (Watch the match, brother. Gul is happily married now).”

Must confess, the clash between the two was really hilarious

"It became the big fat Punjabi wedding" – Gul Panag speaks about her wedding

Gul Panag's overnight wedding on Sunday to her childhood sweetheart Rishi Attari came as a surprise to everyone, except Gul. "I've known Rishi forever...almost! It was one part of my life that I wanted to be kept completely away from public forums including Twitter because he wanted it that way. He was and remains very uncomfortable with being written about. I have to respect that."

Gul has known Rishi from the age of 14. "He was the headboy in the boarding school that I attended. Every girl in the school had a crush on him. I had decided then and there that this was the kind of guy I wanted to marry. At that time, I didn't know I'd marry him one day. Besides the fact that he was so good-looking, I also had other reasons to feel bonded with him. We both are Sikhs and from army backgrounds." She has known Rishi closely for fifteen years. "It's just that people didn't know about it.

We kept our relationship a secret for his sake. He has been my pillar of strength for fifteen years now. He encouraged me to get into Bollywood. At one point, I wanted to leave and join the Kellog's Business School. Rishi persuaded me to stay back. Rishi gives me unconditional support. He looks out for me to the extent that he tells me what to wear when I go out and whether I look good in what I wear.

He's a smart Sikh. He's the smarter one between the two of us. Even he will agree with that if you ask him." A day after the whirlwind wedding, Gul sighed, "I haven't had the chance to let it sink in. It has been one crazy chain of festivities.

We wanted it to be a small intimate wedding in Ladakh-we're both avid trekkers-like what we had seen my friend Shruti Seth going through with Danish Aslam in Goa recently. But heck, it turned to be this big fat Punjabi wedding in Punjab with his family, my family friends and relatives. And you know what? I'm glad it became so large. We had a ball because I wasn't just the coy dulhan sitting in corner watching the show. I really participated in my wedding."

150 guests rode to the wedding on motorbikes. "Even my 62-year old aunt. Both Rishi and I are passionate bike riders. Me, before him.
