Lavni Dance Storms Bollywood

0

After the sizzling 'Sheila Ki Jawani' number, Katrina Kaif is back as 'Chikni Chameli' in Agneepath. The film will be released on January 26, 2012. The lately launched number has already become a rage. The unique blend of traditional Lavani steps and sexy Bollywood moves makes 'Chikni Chameli' impressive.

When people start copying you, it is an indication of your success. Same has happened in the case of 'Chikni Chameli' as well. Shweta Bhardwaj who made her Bollywood debut with Mission Istaanbul will also be seen grooving to a Lavani number in Chaalis Chaurasi. Actors like Kay Kay Menon and Naseeruddin Shah will be seen matching steps with Shweta in the film. Her red 'choli' and Maharshtrian saree looks highly inspired from Kat's outfit in 'Chikni Chameli'. Chaalis Chaurasi will hit screens on January 13, 2012.

Though Shweta looks stunning in the number, but beating Katrina Kaif is no easy task.
Lavani is a form of Maharashtra's folk dance. Bollywood has an old association with this particular dance form. Be it Helen in 'Mungda' song or Madhuri Dixit in 'Humko Ajkal Hai', both the numbers score high on the popularity meter. Madhuri tried to encash the popularity of Lavani again with 'Me Kolahpur Se Ayi Hoon' in Aanjaam.

Lavani is one of the most popular dance forms of Maharashtra. It is known for its powerful rhythm and erotic sentiments. Expressions play a key role in Lavani.

In an interview lately, Katrina Kaif said that 'Chinkni Chameli' wasn't a cakewalk for her as she is not used to the dance form. Many people feel that Katrina looked more sensuous as 'Sheila' in comparison to 'Chikni Chameli'. Whatever be the case, 'Chikni Chameli' is topping the charts at the moment and so is Katrina Kaif. More than Priyanka Chopra, who's the lead heroine of 'Agneepath', people are talking about Katrina's item number.

Bhindi Bazaar Inc. Review

When I make a gangster movie, it will feature Muslim and Hindu extremists. The Hindus will wear saffron and the Muslims will flaunt smudgy eye make-up. There will be riots too and a tranny wh**e, a corrupt cop who swings both ways (between the two rival gangs), etc. This was probably director Ankush Bhatt's vision before he planned to make Bhindi Bazaar Inc.

Okay, to break this film down to a line: It's about a chess game, wherein every move is vaguely metaphoric and hence intercut with a pointless story from the lives of our two lead slum dogs, Darzi (Gautam Sharma) and Fateh (Prashant Narayan). These two are children when they're inducted into the world of pick-pocketing and kite-flying (yes, the two are very connected!).

After picking roughly 550 wallets each, they grow up to become capable henchmen for Mamu (Pawan Malhotra), a local ganglord. Mamu has a mami - Bano (Deepti Naval), many nameless henchmen and a mistress, Shabana (Vedita Pratap Singh), who only sleeps with about 14 men in this movie and with some in the audience. Mamu also has an arch-enemy, an extremist Hindu, Pandey (Piyush Mishra) who had his fingers chopped-off by Mamu himself in a non-sepia flashback. Needless to say, Pandey and gang make several attempts to avenge this and Mamu's men don't let the action choreographer snooze on the sets either.

If you care, the chess game is being played between Shroff (Kay Kay Menon) and Darzi. The former responds to every move made by the latter with raised eye-brows and a bedazzled expression. The conversation between the two is, well, idiotically insightful with dialogues like, "Zindagi mein pata nahin chalta, kaunse mohre kale hain, aur kaunse safed." And they're not even drinking in this scene!

The movie prances about like a headless chicken with predictable internal conspiracies that can be briefly conveyed in this dialogue, 'Ek Mamu mara, toh doosra bana'. We also have a list of cast members who're often forgotten or not informed about the shoot location. They stroll in and out of scenes, without a definite purpose. Kajri (Shilpa Shukla) leads this pack, looking like a mare with a nose ring, hanging with the Mamu clan, hoping for a love angle and dialogues (and perhaps a 'Chak De!' sequel?). Then there's Darzi's love interest, Simran (Shweta Varma) who manages 95 % of her scenes in a public bus, limiting her relationship prospects to frivolous conversation. But the most bizarre and barely-there award goes to Jackie Shroff who plays a narcotics cop. His shots seem to be taken through candid camera, as he aimlessly lurks into the frame, mumbles lines that can't be interpreted and sways his bloated self for a quick exit.

The film's overall production quality is comparable to that of regional reality TV and the background score is solely there to hold up feeble dialogues. What is more upsetting is that veteran actors such as Deepti Naval seem to be wasted and even dependable talent such as Pawan Malhotra and Kay Kay Menon can't save this Titanic.

Exclusive DVD Review Lafangey Parindey

0

By Joginder Tuteja, November 8, 2010 - 14:50 IST

MOVIE DETAILS

Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Deepika Padukone
Director: Pradeep Sarkar
Producer: Aditya Chopra
Music: R. Anandh
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire

THE FILM

There are films that belong to the time pass variety that can be given a one time comfortable watch if seen with limited expectations. Lafangey Parindey is one such film. It doesn't promise a moon, it isn't one of the most awaited films of the year, it doesn't make actors claim it to be a life changing experience and it isn't the kind that audience wait with bated breath to release. All it does it to make you sit through those two hours, get entertained to a fair degree for most part of it and make you start working on something else once the film is through.

Now while that is good enough for this Pradeep Sarkar directed film, considering the fact that his last venture Laaga Chunari Mein Daag was quite unbearable, one does feel that if only Lafangey Parindey could have held on as well in the second half too, it could have actually turned out to be an even better film. Reason being that the film actually catches you unaware in the first half, especially the first 30 minutes that make you glued on to the screen for its entire duration.

Introduction of Neil Nitin Mukesh as a street fighter is done exceedingly well with the characterisation of 'one shot Nandu' being bang on and the fighting bout being shot well too. Deepika as a street-smart lower middle class girl lets go off her inhibitions as well and despite her urban upbringing, she seems to be totally belonging to that class. The story moves well with introduction of Kay Kay Menon (as a protective gangster) and Piyush Mishra (as the gang-lord) reminding one of Ghulam and Parinda. The twist that happens soon after shocks you as well; hence making you look forward to what next is in store.

At this point, one does fear that the drama would loose its sheen. However, the narrative continues to stay on a constantly pleasant note. Though there are a couple of emotional sequences, mainly surrounding Deepika who realises that she has gone blind and won't be able to fulfil her dream of being a skate dancer, there are abundant light moments that keep the smiles on. Neil falling in love with Deepika and inspiring her to pick up the ropes in life all over again could have gone preachy but thankfully that is not the case with Pradeep Sarkar keeping the fun quotient going.

However, it is the second half where things start turning predictable. Stepping in of Neil, a rank 'tapori' with zero knowledge of either dance or skating, as a fellow-dancer with Deepika is unbelievable. Also, though it is understandable that cinematic liberty can be pretty much taken in situations like this, the entire transformation isn't quite convincing. The ease with which the pair keeps passing through the hurdles of the talent rounds is difficult to digest as well while the climax dance sequence, which should have been the highlight of the film a la the kind that was seen in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi isn't as impacting as one would have desired.

Thankfully on the positive side, the film doesn't totally fall off the radar and stays on with the audience, though not with an impact similar to that of the first half. Performance wise though, Lafangey Parindey is the best ever act of Deepika Padukone as she plays the part of a blind girl quite well without hunting for audience sympathy. However, the only time that she is required to do that (when she first realises that life would never be the same again after turning blind) during the song 'Nain Parindey', she is quite good.

Neil Nitin Mukesh fits into the character well and is an altogether different personality in the fighting ring. Also, he mouths a 'tapori' lingo convincingly and conveys a lot through his eyes in the emotional scenes. After New York, he comes up with a good act once again.

PACKAGING

YRF Home Entertainment brings the DVD of Lafangey Parindey in a newly designed compact case, the kind which is associated with Blu-Ray Disc. Attractive! Wish other home entertainment companies also follow suit; after all this packaging saves a lot of space.

DURATION

The film's duration is 116 minutes.

SPECIAL FEATURES

- Making of the film

Making segment here is short and sweet and carries an intrinsic fun element to it for most part of it. Thankfully, there isn't much repeating of the film's synopsis or the characterisation by the lead actors or the director here as they basically share a few anecdotes related to the film. There are quite a few 'on the sets' shots as well that take audience through the actual canning of the scenes. An okay watch that lasts for only close to 20 odd minutes, it could be given a dekko before you play on the DVD.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

- 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation
- Subtitles - English & Arabic
- Dolby Digital 5.1 and Stereo

PRICE

Rs. 299/=

CONCLUSION

Lafangey Parindey is not a film which leads to a debate or an elaborate analysis. It plain and simple keeps you reasonably engaged and though it isn't 'you can't pause for a second or take your eyes off it' cinema, it is fine as long as it lasts.
