Vidya’s ‘Kahaani’ enters third week, still going strong
03 weeks ago
Vidya Balan's "Kahaani" seems to have a struck a chord with the audiences in a big way as the gripping thriller has entered its third week and is still proving to be a crowd puller. The film not only defies the new box office mantra of "focus on first three days' box office collection", but also proves that the actress has a long way to go.
The film earned Rs.43.05 crore since its release March 9.
Director Sujoy Ghosh made it at a budget of Rs.8 crore and the collections show that it's a bumper hit of the first quarter of the year. The second week breakup goes like Rs.2.5 crore Friday, Rs.4.7 crore Saturday, Rs.4.9 crore Sunday, Rs.2 crore Monday, Rs.1.75 crore Tuesday, Rs.1.6 crore Wednesday and Rs.1.5 crore Thursday.
"Generally, most films register a 50 percent to 70 percent decline in the second week, since the screen count is fair/massive these days, but the decline in this case was around 25 percent, which is simply remarkable," tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
"Kahaani" has also proved wrong those who said that Vidya Balan's "The Dirty Picture" triumphed because it was full of skin show. Despite no skin show and no glamour, "Kahaani" has rocked the box office, thanks to Vidya's powerful performance, the storyline and Ghosh's deft treatment to the script.
In the film, set in the backdrop of Kolkata, Vidya plays a software programmer, who comes to the city from London in search of her husband, who is the father of her unborn child. The thriller also features Bengali actor Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in prominent roles.
The film was promoted extensively, but it is word of mouth that has played a vital role in making the film a money-spinner at the box office in the second week, says Anant Verma, business head and director, DT Cinemas.
"Apart from good content, word of mouth publicity has lead to the film doing wonders at the box-office," Verma told IANS.
"Moreover, there has been a lot of hype around Vidya Balan as she swept away all the awards for her portrayal in 'The Dirty Picture'. There is still a lot of curiosity among people," he added.

Kahaani opens well, but Vidya’s TDP was bigger!

It was a double whammy for Vidya Balan last week. First, her raunchy performance in The Dirty Picture got her the Best Actress National Award. Then, her new film Kahaani had an impressive opening at the box office. An overwhelmed Vidya herself said, “I’ve got more than expected.”
Maybe so, but critics and fans had clearly been expecting great things out of Kahaani if Vidya’s run of luck with No One Killed Jessica and The Dirty Picture last year were any indication. And Sujoy Ghosh’s thriller of a pregnant woman in search of her husband, which released nationally on March 8, appeared destined to ring the box office tills loudly.

Opening weekend collections were most encouraging and revealed that Kahaani had received a thumbs-up from audiences. “The first day’s collection was Rs. 85 lakh, which was slow, but on Friday it was Rs. 2.7 crore and Saturday between Rs. 4.5 and Rs. 4.75. The film took a big jump as Vidya has a fan following which might not go on the first day, but as soon as they realise the film is doing well – they will go for it,” said trade analyst Komal Nahta, adding, “I have no clue about the exact overseas collection, but these type of films are made for the Indian markets.”
Nahta had no doubt that Kahaani was doing well in Kolkata and its neighbouring cities, because Durga Puja has been showcased in great detail and accuracy in the film, and the Bengali cine enthusiast would be proud to see his city and culture so excitingly captured by Bollywood. However, Kumar Mohan of Complete Cinema was of the opinion that Kahaani had not got more than a lukewarm response in Kolkata. He was keeping his fingers crossed that the film would collect around Rs. 11 crore this week.
Said Mohan, “This is meaningful cinema and Vidya has given a brilliant performance. Kahaani opened to a 30-40 per cent collection, but picked up over the weekend. I hope it will touch Rs. 10-11 crore after this.” According to Mohan, this would be “pretty good” given that Kahaani had virtually an unknown star cast and Vidya was carrying the film on her slender shoulders alone. “But it had a more bullish opening in Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai as compared to Kolkata,” Mohan stressed.

Kahaani’: Who plays Vidya’s mystery husband?
The identity of the missing husband of Vidya Balan in 'Kahaani' has kept everyone guessing even as director Sujoy Ghosh indicated that no well-known actor has played that role.
Vidya portrays a daring, courageous pregnant woman who comes to Kolkata in search of her missing husband.
There were reports that Emran Hashmi would be seen as her husband in the film, but the role is reportedly essayed by TV actor Indraneil Sengupta. The film makers have not yet revealed the identity of Vidya's husband in the film and keeping everyone guessing.

"If I put a known face (for husband's role), it acts as disadvantage for me because I can't give him that kind of footage on screen. The reason why I did not put a known face is that with a known face there are lot of expectations. Also you have to understand I don't have stars lined up after me as my last two films were flops...so whatever stars I get, I work with them," Ghosh said in an interview.
"All I can say is that the 'husband' is a 'normal actor'. In five minutes...you will know who the husband is," he said. "I feel fortunate to have Vidya Balan act and Amitabh Bachchan singing a song in the film," he stated.

Vidya Balan – Happy that directors are not typecasting me
01 month ago

Bollywood star Vidya Balan who won the National Award for the best actress for her performance as Southern sex siren Silk Smitha in "The Dirty Picture" at the 59th national awards says she is happy that filmmakers are not typecasting her.
From being a demure dame in 'Parineeta' to being a mother in 'Paa' to a sly temptress in 'Ishqiya' to southern siren in 'The Dirty Picture' and now a pregnant woman in 'Kahani', actress Vidya Balan has come a long way.
"Over the past two-three years, there have been writers and directors who have been saying that they are writing roles keeping me in mind. I think what has happened after `Dirty Picture is that people think I am open to experimentation, I am game for all kinds of roles but luckily they are not looking to typecast me," Vidya said in an interview.
She has given back-to-back hit films starting from R Balki's 'Paa' (2009) alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Vishal Bharadwaj's `Ishqiya (2010) opposite Nasseruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi, Raj Kumar Gupta's `No One Killed Jessica (2011) alongside Rani Mukherjee, Milan Luthria's The Dirty Picture (2011).
"The proportion of success in that sense is humongous. Even after Paa, Ishqiya, No One Killed Jessica, people said now what? Are you narrowing down your options? I don't think about these things. God has brought me till here and he will take me further," Vidya said.
"I am here to act. I am not saying that I will do only such roles or solo heroine projects. I want to do different genres of film with different actors and directors," she said.
In director Sujoy Ghosh's today release film Kahaani, Vidya essays the role of a pregnant woman who comes to Kolkata in search of her husband.
Ask her what homework she did for the role, Vidya says, In my college days when I used to travel by train with friends from Chembur to VT station (in Mumbai), I had seen many pregnant women. I used to imitate them.... I think it comes naturally to a woman to carry a baby bump."
"It was not pillow but a prosthetic stomach that was used (for the scene). I could not sit easily as it would hurt me.
There was pressure on lower back as well," she said.
