Farhan learns to run the Milkha way

0

It was a bright winter afternoon in Chandigarh. In the midst of a running track at the Government Boys School, sat four men — Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Farhan Akhtar, Vikram Malhotra (COO, Viacom18) and Milkha Singh —with a pair of shoes. And it wasn’t just any ‘shoe’. The pair of sneakers had trod Roman soil. It had almost won India an Olympic bronze, missing it only by a fraction of a second. It was the same pair that the Flying Sikh had worn in the Olympics finals in 1960.
“I wouldn’t part with it even if someone gave me Rs 10,000 crore,” Milkha had once said and had thus donated the pair of shoes for charity. Filmmaker Mehra had bought it. And on Tuesday afternoon, Milkha was ready to hand over his shoes to the man who is ready to fit into the athlete’s symbolic shoes for Mehra’s upcoming biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

However, the pair of shoes had never been meant for stationary events. It had run a thousand miles. And had a million more left in them. So, Milkha and Farhan took to the running track right after the ‘handing over’ ceremony. While all eyes were fixed on Farhan hoping that the actor, who had been busy practising for his role of an athlete, would run a few laps making it a perfect picture opportunity, the Flying Sikh once again surprised all. Milkha took to the track.

With a shoe in hand, Milkha, who had reportedly been giving Farhan tips on portraying the athlete on the silver screen, started explaining the tricks of running like Milkha. It’s not easy to be Milkha. While the world ran in particular way, Milkha chose to be different. And if Farhan wants to be Milkha Singh, he rather be different too!

Thus started the training. Try running. You will find your arms swinging back and forth with every leap you take. But not Milkha’s. While his left arm would move back and forth, his right arm would strangely swing sideways. This was the Milkha way of breaking records that many athletes picked up.

Farhan, who had been an athlete during his school years, thus started practising the Milkha way of running. We waited. Farhan tried. And voila! He got it right.

Now, Rakeysh Mehra, who was sitting back, watching the two, had an interesting story to tell. We all know how Milkha Singh had sold the story of his life to the filmmaker for Re 1. Mehra, on his part, took efforts to pay him the fee. The filmmaker went out of his way to find a 1960 one-rupee note (considering Milkha ran in the 1960 Olympics). Only when he found one did he pay up. That’s what we call ‘attention to detail’.

Sunny Leone taking lessons in Hindi for ‘Jism 2′

0

Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone, who is better known for her stint in controversial reality show Bigg Boss is all set to make her debut in Bollywood industry with Jism 2. Jism 2 is the sequel to the cult classic film Jism which was a blockbuster produced by Fish Eye Network and had starred John Abraham and Bipasha Basu in lead roles.

Sunny Leone was born Karen Malhotra in Sarnia, Ontario to Sikh Punjabi parents from India. Her father was born in Tibet and raised in Delhi, while her mother (who died in 2008) was from a small town named Nahan in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. Sunny chose to make her career in porn industry as porn actress, today she is successful international adult film star and now is all set try her luck in Hindi cinema industry but she doesn’t know Hindi and the girl has started taking Hindi lessons for her first Bollywood film Jism 2.

"At the gym and also taking audio Hindi lessons! Hindi Hindi Hindi!. I believe this is my birth right to speak Hindi and Punjabi it's who I am. Indian & proud! Jism 2 is giving my big break in movies, So thankful!!," Leone posted on Twitter.

The 30-year-old actress moved to India for Bigg Boss 5, where Bhatt appeared in the show to sign her for the sequel of his hit 2003 film. Leone, on her part, is leaving no stone unturned for the film.

"The people around me probably think I'm crazy. Repeating what I hear out loud in Hindi... Haha whatever! Anything for Jism 2," she added.

Ajay & Tusshar are 2012′s ‘Singhs’

0
Playing a Sardar in a Bollywood film is definitely the 'in' thing. Akshay Kumar started it all, Saif Ali Khan joined in as well, Salman Khan played one in HEROES and Ranbir Kapoor in ROCKET SINGH. Going by the current fad, Ajay Devgn is all set to play a sardar in his upcoming film SON OF SARDAR. Not only Devgn, but the most unsuspecting Tusshar Kapoor is also happy to wear a pagdi in his next release - CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI.

''Yes, of late quite a few B-town folks are playing a Sikh protagonist'', says a filmmaker, ''Earlier it was pretty much the territory of the likes of Dharmendra and Sunny Deol who were rightly known as the 'sons of soil'. Other senior actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt too have experimented by playing a Sardar. However in recent times it is Akshay Kumar who started the trend with SINGH IS KINNG and now other actors are hopping on to the bandwagon as well.''

TUSSHAR KAPOOR and AJAY DEVGN

It seems that Ajay will be well-liked by the audience in a sardar look. ''Ajay is playing the central protagonist in SON OF SARDAR and has already shot for it in Punjab. He had earlier played a Sikh protagonist in THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH but it was a relatively serious affair. SON OF SARDAR has been designed as a full-on-entertainer though and Ajay has gone an extra mile to get the nuances of a Sikh character right'', says a source from the production team.

On the other hand CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI would see Tusshar Kapoor as a sardar for a major segment of the film. An out and out comic affair, the film is directed by Samir Karnik who hit gold with his full-on Punjabi drama in YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA. Though he doesn't have Deols on his side this time around, the filmmaker is hoping that 'being Punjabi' would reap benefits for him yet again for his latest outing.

Tusshar says, ''The film has a North Indian backdrop to it and I had fun playing this character here. Personally for me comedy has always worked and Samir has made sure that this one is a full-on masala out and out romantic comedy. CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI is totally my genre and honestly, this film is the best thing that could have happened to me in the recent times.''

A couple of years ago it was Saif Ali Khan who turned sardar for one of the two characters that he played in LOVE AAJ KAL. It was a serious character but Arshad Warsi got into a comical zone when he portrayed a sardar character in DOUBLE DHAMAAL. This year though it would be the turn of Ajay Devgn and Tusshar Kapoor to get into the Sikh zone.

Opposition mounts to Amitabh’s plea on anti-Sikh riots

0
A move by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to get a clean chit from the Sikh clergy after his name was dragged into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots is facing opposition from sections of the community. Bachchan's plea to the Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh
religion, Gurbachan Singh, through a letter dated Nov 28, in which he pleaded his innocence in the anti-Sikh riots, is likely to be considered for discussion by the five Sikh high priests at a meeting here Dec 22.

The letter was delivered to the Akal Takht head by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member from Mumbai, Gurinder Singh Bawa. The letter from the actor came after he was invited by the Punjab government for the inauguration of the Khalsa Heritage Complex's Virasat-e-Khalsa monument at Anandpur Sahib last month but he did not come after sections of the Sikh community objected.

In his letter, Bachchan wrote: "I am addressing this letter to you with a most pained heart. Wild, irresponsible and most unfounded allegations, by certain sections of the Sikh community, about my involvement in the inciting of violence against them during the most unfortunate Sikh riots of 1984, soon after the death of Shrimati Indira Gandhi, the then prime minister of India, has caused me acute agony.

"These vicious allegations have caused me deep hurt, particularly when they were levelled at a time when I had accepted the invitation from the Punjab government to attend the inaugural ceremony of the historical Khalsa Heritage Complex at Sri Anandpur Sahib, the birthplace of the Khalsa Panth. I was indeed looking forward to attending this sacred ceremony and sharing the immense pleasure and divine bliss with the Sikh Sangat, but declined because I did not want to be the cause for any embarrassment at this historical function.

"Now that the ceremony is over, I wish to take this opportunity to vehemently and categorically deny these allegations against me which are completely baseless, false and untrue. The Nehru-Gandhi family and our family have old ties from our city of origin, Allahabad. We have been together in each other's hour of grief and joy, but to allege that I was a part of the crowd that incited them to raise anti-Sikh slogans is a preposterous and blatant lie. Quite contrarily, I have always propagated the soothing of injured feelings and the maintenance of serenity. The unfortunate incidents of the riots of 1984 against the Sikhs shall always remain a blot and a dark phase in the history of our country, a country that prides itself in its secular credentials."

Bachchan even attached a copy of a photograph of his maternal grandparents, who were from a Sikh family. He pointed out that his maternal grandfather, Khazan Singh Suri, was a bar-at-law from England and that his mother, Teji Bachchan, came from a Sikh family.

Akal Takht head Gurbachan Singh, while acknowledging that he had got the letter, said: "The matter is linked to Sikh sentiments. The five Singh Sahibaan (Sikh high priests) will consider his letter and discuss the matter at their meeting. Whatever they decide, the next action will be taken accordingly."

Bachchan pointed out that he had come to the holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandar Sahib (popularly known as the Golden Temple), here in December 2007 for prayers after the passing away of his mother.

However, Sikh organisations and independent witnesses have now come forward claiming that Bachchan, then close to the Gandhi family, had come out of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi Oct 31, 1984, and instigated crowds. A California-based Sikh, Manjit Singh, who lived in the Kalu Sarai area of Delhi then, said in an affidavit to Akal Takht that he himself saw Bachchan instigating people. Bachchan later became an MP for three years representing the Congress party.

The All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), in a statement, alleged that Bachchan's slogans were broadcast in 1984 by the state-owned Doordarshan Television and All India Radio (AIR). The AISSF said independent witnesses like Jagdish Kaur, Babu Singh Dukhiya and others who watched the relay on Doordarshan and saw Bachchan inciting violence are ready to testify in this matter before the Akal Takht.

AISSF said the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, which controlled the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), was trying to give a clean chit to Bachchan.

Nearly 7,000 Sikhs were killed in the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots in various parts of the country following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards in New Delhi Oct 31, 1984.

Over 3,000 were killed in Delhi alone.

In this process, Ranveer had lost his younger brother Bikram, but now he had made some new and strong relations with Rizwan Haider, Fateh Singh, Sean Meyers and last but not the least Amelia Whites.

The story of the film deals with the bonding of dissimilar cast and cultures in the United States of America which is said to be the only nation on the globe, which is so multi-dimensional.
