Vidya Balan even abused Vidhu Vinod Chopra to bag Parineeta

0

She is one of the most sought after actresses today but her journey in filmdom wasn’t a cake walk. Vidya Balan had to give over 60 screen tests for her debut Bollywood film, ‘Parineeta’.

After appearing in several ad films and music videos, she made her debut in B-town with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s home production in 2005.

“I was doing ad films and I had signed quite a few South films but then I went through a phase of being called jinxed because my first South film was stopped midway and then even other directors threw me out of their films.

Then I started doing music videos...but Dada (director Pradeep Sarkar) had told me he would make a film with me,” Vidya told reporters here, last night at the Vidhu Vinod Chopra festival.

“He (Pradeep Sarkar) went to Chopra (Producer) with the script and the latter wanted a bigger star but he also said if I am able to show that I can do the role then they will take me.

I gave over 60 tests..right from Indian look, western look, curly hair, straight hair, song, emotional scene..etc. I kept doing it but later I was fed up as I was not aware if they were really going to take me or not,” Vidya said.

“And the moment I gave up was the time when I got the film,” 34-year-old actress recalled.

Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra made her undergo gruelling tests for the role of Lalita, till she got it right.

Vidya Balan's "Kahaani" seems to have a struck a chord with the audiences in a big way as the gripping thriller has entered its third week and is still proving to be a crowd puller. The film not only defies the new box office mantra of "focus on first three days' box office collection", but also proves that the actress has a long way to go.

The film earned Rs.43.05 crore since its release March 9.

Director Sujoy Ghosh made it at a budget of Rs.8 crore and the collections show that it's a bumper hit of the first quarter of the year. The second week breakup goes like Rs.2.5 crore Friday, Rs.4.7 crore Saturday, Rs.4.9 crore Sunday, Rs.2 crore Monday, Rs.1.75 crore Tuesday, Rs.1.6 crore Wednesday and Rs.1.5 crore Thursday.

"Generally, most films register a 50 percent to 70 percent decline in the second week, since the screen count is fair/massive these days, but the decline in this case was around 25 percent, which is simply remarkable," tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

"Kahaani" has also proved wrong those who said that Vidya Balan's "The Dirty Picture" triumphed because it was full of skin show. Despite no skin show and no glamour, "Kahaani" has rocked the box office, thanks to Vidya's powerful performance, the storyline and Ghosh's deft treatment to the script.

In the film, set in the backdrop of Kolkata, Vidya plays a software programmer, who comes to the city from London in search of her husband, who is the father of her unborn child. The thriller also features Bengali actor Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in prominent roles.

The film was promoted extensively, but it is word of mouth that has played a vital role in making the film a money-spinner at the box office in the second week, says Anant Verma, business head and director, DT Cinemas.

"Apart from good content, word of mouth publicity has lead to the film doing wonders at the box-office," Verma told IANS.

"Moreover, there has been a lot of hype around Vidya Balan as she swept away all the awards for her portrayal in 'The Dirty Picture'. There is still a lot of curiosity among people," he added.

Aamir forced to reshoot Talaash due to Vidya’s Kahaani

Aamir Khan and Vidya Balan share a lot in common. Both of them are at the pinnacle of their respective careers. They take extreme care in choosing their movies. In fact, like Aamir, even Vidya is being addressed by the title ‘perfectionist’ now. But there is another thing that Aamir shares with Vidya, and he surely would not have wanted to do that. If reports are to be believed, the basic plot of Aamir’s highly anticipated ‘Talaash’ is similar to that of the Vidya’s recently released ‘Kahaani’; and that has forced Mr. Perfectionist to reshoot the climax, resulting in the delay of the film’s release.

There were recent reports stating that ‘Talaash’, which was earlier scheduled to release in June, has been pushed forward for a November release because of Aamir being preoccupied with his soon-to-launch TV show. But inside sources have revealed that this is not the case. Aamir is reportedly worried that ‘Kahaani’ has played a spoiler to the plot of ‘Talaash’ and hence the climax needs a bit of nip and tuck. The source further discloses that Aamir cannot afford to take chances with the movie because he anyway gives his commitment to a single movie at a time, and the movie is made crispier as a result.

Being the perfectionist that Aamir is, he would not take chances with the movie. And postponing it to make it better seems to be the best deal rather than serving the audience an already seen product.
